BUT WHAT CAN HE DO?

Broadly speaking, I help people tell better stories through digital and traditional communications strategy. My work experience doesn’t fit cleanly into traditional buckets. I’m okay with that.

I’ve spent my entire professional career seeking experience in every arena of marketing and communications including public relations, traditional and digital marketing, media planning, search engine marketing (SEM) and other digital advertising, SEO, web design, social media and web content strategy, graphic design, event planning, photography/video and writing.

I’ve also written for several publications about media rhetoric, internet culture, higher education, marketing, and policy and politics.

So, call me a T-skilled communicator, a full stack marketer, or a digital unicorn. You can even call me a nerd. Just don’t call me lazy.

DIGITAL STRATEGY

Give me a message, an audience and a goal and I will dive in and figure out the right communications channels to engage, measure success and ruthlessly seek opportunities for improvement. I’m an omni-channel marketer that has executed communications and marketing strategy for higher education, policy research organizations, the performing arts and more.

But enough of those buzzwords. I’ve worked in the full marketing stack. Get a load of THESE buzzwords:

  • Web design
  • Web content
  • Social media campaigns
  • Paid social/SEM
  • SEO
  • Digital and “analog” paid advertising
  • Email campaigns
  • Public relations
  • Event planning
  • Photography and video production
  • 360 degree video (for real!)

Is your website, ad campaign or communications strategy underperforming? Let’s take a look under the hood at the data. I’m Google Analytics, AdWords and Hubspot Inbound marketing certified and have a handy nanodegree in digital marketing under my belt too.

MEDIA AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

Leveraging external communications channels through media engagement is just as important as planning an effective paid-media spend. I’ve pitched and secured placement in the New York Times, WBEZ/NPR, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Tonight, Chicago Reader and more. I love planning and executing high-level communications strategy and I can keep a cool head when it’s time to manage a crisis-level PR situation. I’m also an active member in Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND ART DIRECTION

I’ve worked with a bevy of external vendors from web designers to video production companies to print designers and media relations staff. I’d like to think I’m a pretty good client. I thrive on project management processes and I’ve logged enough hours into Basecamp that I see the little green logo in my dreams. Recently I served as lead project-manager for the complete redesign of a college’s website. I managed a team of content editors, worked with a team of internal web developers and an external agency to launch an award-winning site on time and under budget. It was a huge project that took almost two years, but I’m just getting started.

CONTENT

I love to write too! I’ve written about new media and communications trends, issues in higher education and local politics. I’ve also created content for employers and client in higher education, performing arts, public policy research organizations, political campaigns, legal and business industries. I’ve also executed my fair share of social media and email campaigns along the way. Want me to help you tell better stories? Let’s connect.

WEB DEVELOPMENT

Finally, I know a thing or two about web development. (You’re on my custom-themed WordPress website right?) As a freelancer and full-time professional, I’ve worked on a number of small-scale web development projects. I’ve built sites on Drupal, Joomla! and WordPress (my favorite CMS to work on).

If you’re interested in working with me on a web project, send me a note! If you’re curious about how this site was built, I have a big nerdy blog post to answer all your questions (and you can even download this theme for free and use it for your own projects!).
